Can a suspecting father force a paternity test?

kathenn76 asked:

A friend of mone had a one night stand over a year ago. She has been raising the baby alone and the father in question has no idea the baby exists. If he were to catch wind that he may have a child can he force a DNA or paternity test?
My friend is the mother of the baby and she does not want the father to even know about the baby at all. The guy is basically a loser drug addict who has no idea that this baby has existed for the last 7 months but he may have just caught wind he has a baby. Not that anyone expects him to be a stand up dad but she never intended on telling this one night stand about her accidental pregnancy.

Only if he’s claiming parental rights, or trying to get out of a child support ruling.

He would have to go to family court with a lawyer and present his case of why he feels he is the father. He could file ‘latches’ which was founded for parents who have a child that is kept from them. The paternity test would be court ordered and she would have no choice unless she wanted to lose custody of her child.

Doing all of this of coarse should be last resort. He could go to her and ask her about the childs paternity and that he would like a test to be done because he wants to help support and spend time with the child if he turns out to be the father.

You can order a swab kit, send it in and have the results in a few weeks. They could also go to a Doctor or DNA testing facility and have the test done.

If he thinks it could be his, and wants to establish paternity to get custidy or visitation rights, yes he definitly could. Though he would have to know that establishing paternity would also make him pay child support unless he could get 50/50 shared custody (which would be hard to do). Though would have to say I applaude your friend if he is someone that would care to want to do that. So many guys would just walk away from that hoping its not his, or that if it was she would never go after him about it.
